What Is Iridology?

Iridology (pronounced eye-ri-dology) is the art and science of analyzing the color and structure of the iris to determine tissue integrity throughout the body, thereby gaining valuable health information regarding strenghts and weaknesses. Iridologists study the iris, particularly the color, markings, changes and other aspects, as they are associated with tissue degeneration. Iridology is one form of analysis that is non-invasive to the body...requiring no cutting, x-raying or use of any other invasive technique to complete the analysis.

What can you tell from Iridology

By studying the iris of both eyes, a qualified iridologist can obtain information about all parts of the body simultaneously. The iris reveals our inherited health disposition, our tendency towards health problems, our current health conditions, and gives advance warning of what may occur in the future. This is powerful knowledge and can help us take care of our bodies so these tendencies do not become reality. Today, early detection of health imbalances and prompt correction is vitally important. Iridology is a tool of assessment for current conditions and for preventive healthcare.

How is Iridology performed?

A practitioner skilled in iris analysis uses either a hand held light source and a small magnifying lens, or for more extensive analysis a special camera is used for taking prints, slides, or digital pictures allowing the practitioner the ability to study the iris at length before completing the analysis. Dr. Cheryl Matschek utilizes the specialized camera in her practice to take slides for the iris analysis. Iridology remains somewhat controversial because of its struggle for acceptance by contemporary allopathic medicine as a valid examination method. It is used by many doctors in European countries as a regular part of diagnosis. It is part of a larger family of the numerous branches of the natural healing arts. Its partner is the art and science of nutrition.

How long does a consultation take?

The initial appointment takes 45-60 minutes. This includes time for a brief client information session and then photographs are taken. A second appointment is scheduled to return after the film is developed and time is allowed for the comprehensive analysis to be completed and put into writing for the client. For the second appointment Cheryl normally allows between one and one-half to two hours.

Will this harm my eyes?

Absolutely not. You should not have any adverse effects from the iris

examination or the taking of the iris photographs. In fact, the camera used does not use a flash system, rather it involves the use of fiberoptics for lighting.

Why haven't we heard more about Iridology?

Although the science of Iridology is at least 3,000 years old and is used worldwide, it is still essentially a "sleeping giant" in the United States, but it is coming out of seclusion. The oldest discovered records to date have shown that a form of iris interpretation was used in ancient China as far back as 3,000 years ago...1,000 B.C. St. Luke, in the Bible (Matthew 6:22-23) writes that Jesus Christ said, "The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness." Two men "rediscovered" the idea of iris analysis in the nineteenth century and are both held to be the modern day "fathers of iridology." These were Dr. Ignatz von Peczely of Germany, and Nils Liljequist, a Swedish clergyman. Throughout the years others have contributed greatly to the development of iridology. The "Father of Iridology" in the United States is Dr. Bernard Jensen. Prior to his death in 2001 (at the age of 92) he wrote numerous books on Iridology, nutrition and health, spent countless hours lecturing and teaching, and had, it appears, delved deeper into the subject than anyone.

Iridology and Natural Health

As a natural health practitioner, Cheryl takes into account the whole person. She looks beyond a "disease" to the whole person. We must remember that diseases do not create us, we create disease. And we must also remember that we don't "catch" diseases. We create disease and disorder by breaking down our natural defenses by the way we eat, drink, think, feel and the lifestyle we live. The emphasis on healing must include the whole person, not just the disease. Iridology helps us look at the "whole person" and determine levels of health throughout the body.

Analysis, Not Diagnosis

Early day iridologists referred to iris "diagnosis." Today we refer to the art and science as "analysis." In the United States, making a diagnosis implies that you are a doctor duly licensed to diagnose. The term "analysis" is accurate when referring to iridology.

How To Have an Iris Analysis Completed

All iridology sessions are by appointment only. Please call Cheryl to obtain further information or to schedule an appointment.

Iridology Practitioners

Iridologists generally use equipment such as a flashlight and magnifying glass, cameras or slit-lamp microscopes to examine a patient's irises for tissue changes, as well as features such as specific pigment patterns and "irregular stromal architecture". The markings and patterns are usually compared to an iris chart that correlates specific zones of the iris with specific parts of the body. Typical charts divide the iris into approximately 80-90 zones. For example, the zone corresponding to the kidney is often in the lower part of the iris just before 6 o'clock. However, iridologists use a number of different maps that do not necessarily agree with one another.According to iridologists , details in the iris are supposed to reflect changes in the tissues of the corresponding body organs. For example, acute inflammatory, chronic inflammatory and catharral signs are said to indicate involvement, maintenance, or healing of corresponding distant tissues, respectively. Other features that iridologists look for are contraction rings and Klumpenzellen, which are said to indicate various other health conditions, as interpreted in context.

Iridology

Before engaging in any complementary medical technique, you should be aware that many of these techniques have not been evaluated in scientific studies. Often, only limited information is available about their safety and effectiveness. Each state and each discipline has its own rules about whether practitioners are required to be professionally licensed. If you plan to visit a practitioner, it is recommended that you choose one who is licensed by a recognized national organization and who abides by the organization's standards. It is always best to speak with your primary health care provider before starting any new therapeutic technique.

Iridology is the study of the iris (the colored part of the eye). The intention of iridology is to gain information about underlying diseases. Analysis of the iris has ancient roots, but iridology in its present sense was established by Philippi Meyers in the 1600s. Developed in Hungary in the 1800s by Dr. Ignatz von Pezcely and Nils Liljequist, iridology was later adapted by Bernard Jensen, an American chiropractor. Jensen correlated organs, body parts and functions with specific locations in the iris using detailed diagrams. Iridology grew in popularity in the 1900s. Studies have been published in Germany, Sweden, Norway, England, France, USA, Australia and elsewhere, and iridology is practiced worldwide.

Iridologists visually assess irises by directly examining them or by studying close-up photographs. Some iridologists use sclerology, a technique that studies lines on the sclera (the white part of the eye), which they believe can show changes in health patterns and conditions. One type of iridology called Rayid studies eye patterns to evaluate mental, emotional, spiritual and physical balance. Naturopaths and other practitioners may also practice iridology.

Iridology is based on the belief that each body region and organ has a corresponding location in the iris. Abnormalities in the iris are suggested to represent abnormalities in the respective organ. Iridologists believe that the degrees of light and darkness in the iris reflect general health.

An iridologist may use an ophthalmoscope to examine the iris or may use a special camera to take pictures of the iris. These color photographs or transparencies may be magnified in an attempt to identify weakness in the body or to diagnose disease. Microscopes and computer imaging may be also used.

Colors, marks, textures, fibers and pigmentation changes in the iris, as well as in the pupil and sclera, may be studied. These signs are thought to correlate with disease. Different colors or rings within the iris are believed to represent different aspects of health and to play a role in diagnosis. Some therapists are using iridology as a basis for recommending dietary supplements and/or herbs.

Scientists have studied iridology for the following use:

Disease diagnosis
There is no proven scientific basis for iridology. Several studies in humans report that iridology is not effective for diagnosing disease.
Hypertension diagnosis
Preliminary research suggests that iridology may assist in the identification of individual predispositions for vascular diseases such as hypertension. Further research is needed to confirm these findings.

Iridology has been suggested for many other uses, based on tradition or on scientific theories. However, these uses have not been thoroughly studied in humans, and there is limited scientific evidence about safety or effectiveness. Some of these suggested uses are for conditions that are life-threatening. Consult with a health care provider before using iridology for any use.

Iridology should not be used alone to diagnose disease. Studies of iridology have reported incorrect diagnoses, and potentially severe medical problems may thus go undiagnosed. In addition, research suggests that iridology may lead to inappropriate treatment. Iridology itself has not been reported as harmful in otherwise healthy people.

Differences in pupil size, magnification and the effect of oblique light may affect iridologist readings of patient photos. There is little agreement among iridologists regarding the iris key (irigraphy) and the interpretation of different sights. Some modern diseases are missing in the diagnostic system. Research suggests that iridology is not an effective method to diagnose or help treat any specific medical condition.
